The Client

The Concept to Clinic challenge brought together hundreds of data scientists and engineers from around the world to build open source tools to fight the world’s deadliest cancer.

The Challenge

Lung cancer is the leading cause of death among cancer patients in the U.S. Unfortunately, only 16% of lung cancer cases are diagnosed at an early stage.

The Outcome

We managed community development of a lung cancer detection prototype that helped clinicians flag, assess, and report concerning nodules by analyzing 3-D scans of lungs (CT scans). To do this, we resolved merge conflicts, awarded points for user contribution, and developed a skeleton API. This API ingested CT scans as DICOM files and allowed users to predict cancerous lung nodules with a trained machine learning algorithm.

The Concept to Clinic community built upon the skeleton API and added a graphical user interface to create a fully featured web application.
